Nature is Outside, 2013. Single-channel video, color, sound.
Nature is Outside is loosely based on Kant’s writing about artistic genius in Critique of Judgement. In the Kantian text, genius bridges the gap between nature (or objective, external conditions) and art (subjective, internal expression). As such, it is a paradoxical figure, both that which is outside, given to us from God or nature, and that which is inside, the internalization of natural ability. This video reduces Kant’s text to a series of simple expressions that point out the duality of the art object. The text is paired with an animation of a tesseract, a 4-dimensional cube. The tesseract is an object that, when in motion, continuously inverts the relationship between its internal and external structures.
